ShopNora keeps a shopping list for each supermarket, remembers what things cost, and shows what the same list would cost at your other supermarkets. Answers to common questions are below, and we're always happy to help by email. The same step-by-step guide is inside the app, under Settings → User guide.
No account, and no internet for everyday use. There is no sign-up and no server: your supermarkets, products, prices, lists and trips are kept on your device. The one thing that uses the internet is the optional product lookup after you scan an unknown barcode, which you can switch off.
The five tabs along the bottom are Shopping, Shops, Products, History and Settings.
1. In Shops, tap Add supermarket for each supermarket you use.
2. In Shopping, tap a supermarket to start its list, then tap Add item.
3. Search for a product and tap it to add it. If it isn’t there yet, tap New product, or Scan barcode.
4. In the shop, tick each item as it goes in your trolley.
5. At the till, tap Finish shopping. The trip is saved in History.
Open the Products tab and tap Add manually, or tap Scan barcode. Only the name is required; brand, category, size, barcode and notes are optional. You can find a product again by its name or its barcode.
Only to scan a barcode, and only after you tap Scan barcode. Your device asks once. If you say no, nothing else is affected: tap Enter barcode and type the digits printed under it, or add the product by hand. You can change your mind later in Settings → Camera access.
In poor light, use the torch button. If it still won’t read, tap Enter barcode and type the digits. If no product is found, add it yourself with Add product manually.
When you scan a barcode that isn’t already one of your products, ShopNora can ask Open Food Facts, a community product database, for a name and a picture. Only the barcode digits are sent. Nothing is saved until you tap Add product, and you can edit it first. Switch Online product lookup off in Settings and scanning stays entirely on your device. See the Privacy Policy.
Open the product and use Picture options. Find picture fetches one from Open Food Facts (the product needs a barcode). Add photo lets you take a photo (on a phone or tablet) or choose one from your photos or files. Get sharper picture fetches a larger version of a picture that came from Open Food Facts. Remove picture takes it off; a photo you added yourself is deleted from the device and can’t be brought back.
Open a product and tap Add price. Choose the supermarket, enter the price, check the currency and the date, and tap Save. ShopNora keeps every price you record, so you can see how they change. The default currency for new prices is in Settings, and changing it never alters an old price.
An item’s price starts as an estimate: the last price you recorded at that supermarket. When you tick the item, tap Use beside the estimate to confirm it, or tap Enter price to type what you actually paid. An item with no recorded price says Price unknown. The totals show an Estimated total and the Actual so far.
Tap Undo straight after. Otherwise, add it again with Add item.
On a list, tap Compare shops to see what the same list would cost at your other supermarkets, based on your last recorded prices. A supermarket is ranked only when every item on the list has a recorded price there; supermarkets with prices missing are shown separately and are not ranked. Prices may have changed since they were recorded, so treat it as a guide.
Tick what you bought, tap Finish shopping, choose whether the items you didn’t tick go onto the next list, and tap Finish and save trip. The trip is saved in History with what you bought and what you paid. A trip is a snapshot of that day: if you later change a product, a supermarket or a price, the trip stays exactly as it was.
Only on your device. If the device is lost or reset, or you uninstall ShopNora, your data goes too, unless you have a backup.
All of these are in Settings. A backup isn’t encrypted and shows what you buy and where, so keep the file somewhere private.
Settings → Your data → Clear application data. You type a word to confirm. It deletes everything on the device, including pictures and the backups kept inside the app, and resets the settings. Export a backup first if you might want your data back. There is no account, so there is nothing for us to delete. See the Privacy Policy.
Yes. It follows your device’s text size, and everything wraps to fit. With VoiceOver or TalkBack each list item is read as one line, and its actions (mark purchased, change the quantity, edit, remove, enter a price) are in the screen reader’s actions menu. Supermarkets can be reordered the same way.
Yes. Settings → Appearance follows your device’s light or dark setting, or you can choose Light or Dark.
